Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, is currently leading the Gandey assembly bypoll by 1,148 votes over BJP's Dilip Kumar Verma after four rounds of counting, according to the Election Commission.
Initially trailing by 2,242 votes, Soren’s gains signify a critical comeback for the JMM, especially after the seat fell vacant following Sarfaraz Ahmad’s resignation. With 2.17 lakh of 3.16 lakh voters participating, the counting is projected to wrap up in 24 rounds.
Kalpana Soren has emerged as a significant political figure since the 51st Foundation Day of JMM, where she addressed the impact of Hemant Soren’s arrest for alleged land fraud. As her husband's political future remains uncertain, internal family disputes, including opposition from sister-in-law Sita Soren, challenge her potential ascendancy. Nevertheless, Kalpana remains undeterred, rallying support and advocating for justice and leadership in Jharkhand.
