Akhilesh Yadav's political stock surged dramatically on Tuesday as his Samajwadi Party dealt a significant blow to the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh. As trends emerged, the SP was leading in 33 seats compared to the BJP's 36.
This unexpected tally throws a wrench in the BJP's ambitions of sweeping the state, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents a constituency. Akhilesh's last stronghold was just five seats, shared with the BSP, in the previous election. Now, they've handed the BJP a crushing defeat, especially notable given that BJP had clinched 62 seats solo in 2019.
Akhilesh Yadav, born on July 1, 1973, took the reins of the opposition’s campaign, partnering effectively with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Arvind Kejriwal's outfit. The 2024 general election marked a significant test for him, being the first since the death of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. Akhilesh’s leadership has now resulted in a seat count surpassing even the 2004 elections.
