Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Faces Toughest Challenge Yet: Trailing Behind Yusuf Pathan in Baharampur
The Congress in West Bengal was taken aback as Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury faced an imminent defeat in Baharampur, trailing by nearly 60,000 votes to TMC's Yusuf Pathan. This outcome could signify the end of one of Congress's last strongholds in the region and raise questions about Chowdhury's political future.

The Congress party in West Bengal was taken by surprise on Tuesday with its chief strategist in the state, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, seemingly headed for a comprehensive defeat in his home constituency of Baharampur.
According to Election Commission of India (ECI) data, Chowdhury trailed by nearly 60,000 votes behind Trinamool Congress's (TMC) candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan, as the vote counting neared completion.
A defeat in Baharampur, one of the last-standing Congress bastions in West Bengal, would mark the first time that the TMC has conquered this region. Chowdhury, who has been an MP from Baharampur since 1999 and serves as the state Congress president, now faces what may be his most formidable electoral challenge yet.
Throughout his career, Chowdhury has consistently bested his competitors, including three successive wins against RSP’s Pramothes Mukherjee during the Left Front era and prevailing over TMC challengers in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Despite previous tensions with the Congress high command, Chowdhury was key in establishing a seat-sharing agreement with the Left to counter the TMC in the current elections, despite both sides being part of the opposition's INDIA bloc at the national level. He has been a staunch critic of TMC leader Mamata Banerjee since the Congress and TMC’s alliance dissolved after the 2011 Assembly elections.
Chowdhury's narrative of a Left-Congress alliance to simultaneously combat both the BJP and the TMC in Bengal, which showed initial success in the 2016 and 2021 state polls, now appears flawed, as the alliance's vote share and seat count are predicted to decline compared to 2019.
The potential setback for the Left-Congress duo not only puts their electoral partnership under scrutiny but also casts uncertainty over Chowdhury’s political career.
