Haiti’s Newly Appointed Prime Minister Hospitalised: Uncertain Future for Garry Conille

Haiti's newly appointed prime minister, Garry Conille, was hospitalized late Saturday in Port-au-Prince, just days after arriving in the country, an official confirmed to The Associated Press. The reasons for Conille’s hospitalization remain unclear.

Louis Gérald Gilles, a member of the transitional presidential council that selected Conille, mentioned he was heading to the hospital but didn’t have additional details. A spokesman for Conille hasn’t commented on the situation.

High-ranking officials, including Haiti's National Police Director Frantz Elbé and UNICEF’s representative Bruno Maes, were seen entering the hospital. Both refrained from commenting. Meanwhile, curious onlookers gathered outside as authorities blocked the street.

Conille, who was chosen as prime minister on May 28 following a convoluted selection process, is expected to tackle issues like gang violence. His appointment came after former Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned amid escalating violence. Conille, previously serving as Haiti's prime minister from 2011 to 2012, arrived in Haiti on June 1 and has since been active in the capital, including going on patrols with the police.

Earlier Saturday, he visited the international airport which had recently reopened after being closed for nearly three months due to gang violence. Conille's hospitalization comes at a delicate time as he held meetings with various officials and the business sector, including planning for the new Cabinet.
