In a recent meeting with party senators, Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif pinpointed Imran Khan as the primary obstacle to meaningful political reconciliation in the country. Addressing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party members, Sharif underscored his party's steadfast commitment to dialogue and eschewed any intentions of political revenge. Sharif stressed that one-sided unwillingness from Khan, also a former prime minister and leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), hinders productive negotiations.
Highlighting past interactions, Sharif noted Khan's refusal to accept offers of peaceful engagement, revealing a consistent pattern of non-cooperation. 'How can one negotiate when he is not serious?' Sharif questioned, echoing sentiments of frustration over stalled talks. Citing historical examples, he mentioned his amicable meeting with the late premier Benazir Bhutto as an illustration of putting politics aside for the nation's greater good.
Sharif reiterated his stance on political vengeance, revealing attempts during Khan's tenure to strip him of basic comforts in prison. Despite these adversities, Sharif proclaimed his focus on dialogue and reconciliation over grudges. Meanwhile, Khan maintains that he will only negotiate with the 'real stakeholders,' accusing the PML-N of illegitimately seizing power.
