JP Nadda, after steering the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its national president for over four years, rejoined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers on Sunday.
The 63-year-old took the oath of office as a Cabinet minister, becoming the sole representative from Himachal Pradesh in the BJP-led government. His ministerial portfolio is yet to be disclosed.
Nadda previously served as the Union Health Minister during Modi's first term, from November 2014 to May 2019. With a law degree and a political beginning in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Nadda has been deeply rooted in BJP's hierarchy for decades.
Throughout his career, Nadda assumed various significant roles within the BJP, orchestrating election campaigns across several states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. His journey in national politics took a crucial turn when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and later inducted into the BJP's parliamentary board in 2014 under Amit Shah's presidency.
Under Nadda's leadership, the BJP secured substantial assembly victories, despite facing stiff competition from a united opposition. His tenure first as the working president and later as the national president marked a period of strategic consolidation and territorial expansion for the party.
With his term concluding in June, Nadda hoped to cap his presidency with another remarkable Lok Sabha election victory. While the BJP-led NDA secured 293 seats, ensuring Modi's third prime ministerial term, the BJP alone saw reduced numbers, winning only 240 seats. Nonetheless, Nadda's leadership and political acumen remain valued assets within the party's ranks.
Esteemed within the BJP for his unfailing politeness and restraint in public discourse, Nadda enjoys a close rapport with Prime Minister Modi, cementing his influential position in Indian politics.
