In a surprising turn of events, Romania's President Klaus Iohannis has officially withdrawn from the race to become NATO's next secretary general. This move has effectively paved the way for outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to almost certainly assume the prestigious position from October.
The announcement came from Iohannis' office, which revealed that Romania's security council had thrown its support behind Rutte. Iohannis informed NATO at the end of last week about his decision to step aside.
With this withdrawal, Rutte's path to leadership appears unobstructed, enabling NATO to showcase solidarity as leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, gather in Washington from July 9-11 to commemorate the alliance's 75th anniversary. Rutte's appointment might be confirmed by NATO ambassadors or during the Washington summit, with him starting on October 1.
