President Murmu Defends EVMs Amidst Democratic Credibility Concerns

Addressing the joint session of the 18th Lok Sabha, she urged citizens to collectively denounce any attempts to undermine the electoral process.

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday firmly defended the credibility of India's Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), calling on citizens to collectively denounce any attempts to undermine democratic integrity. She highlighted that the EVMs have passed stringent tests from the Supreme Court and the people's court.

In her address to the newly constituted 18th Lok Sabha, Murmu underscored the nation's pride in conducting large-scale elections with minimal violence and disorder. She noted that out of nearly 97 crore electors, 64.2 crore voted in the recent Lok Sabha elections, held in seven phases.

Murmu stressed the need to preserve public trust in electoral institutions, remarking that damaging this faith is akin to 'cutting the branch on which we all are sitting.' She recounted past issues with ballot paper snatching and looting, and praised the Election Commission for its role in the recent peaceful elections, including the high voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir.
