Venezuela's main opposition coalition welcomed President Nicolas Maduro's announcement on Tuesday about his plans to resume negotiations with the United States this week. The coalition sees this move as a positive sign ahead of the country's highly anticipated presidential election.

The executive secretary of the U.S.-backed Unitary Platform coalition, Omar Barboza, said that the alliance is prepared to engage in bilateral discussions to support the electoral process and democratic guarantees. 'Differences must be resolved through peaceful means, through dialogue,' Barboza emphasized. Although the U.S. has not confirmed any planned negotiations, Maduro noted that talks with the Biden administration would restart on Wednesday, describing the dialogue as 'urgent.'

Maduro has been in talks with both the Biden administration and the opposition coalition for about two years, seeking relief from sanctions and access to frozen assets. The upcoming July 28 election represents a significant challenge for Venezuela's ruling party after decades of dominance, underlining the urgent need for dialogue and democratic reforms.
