Balan's comments were a response to CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam's sharp criticism, where he warned that SFI could become a liability if it does not amend its ways. Viswam had pointed to recent alleged misconduct by SFI members, including slapping a college principal and assaulting a KSU leader.

SFI state secretary P M Arsho also weighed in, urging leaders to avoid falling for propaganda by vested interests. The debate highlights deep-rooted tensions over the future direction of the student movement within Kerala's Left political spectrum.
