The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has rekindled its alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, scheduled later this year, party leaders announced on Thursday.
Under the new arrangement, the BSP will contest 37 out of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana, leaving the remaining seats for its senior partner INLD. The ruling BJP is also aiming for a third consecutive term in power.
At a joint press conference held at Nayagaon near Chandigarh, INLD leader Abhay Chautala emphasized that the alliance is focused on the welfare of the people, rather than selfish interests. Chautala stated that the joint effort aims to ensure justice for the poor and empowerment for weaker sections.
Chautala added, 'In Haryana, we have decided to collectively fight the upcoming assembly elections. The prevailing sentiment among the people is to oust the BJP from power and prevent the Congress party, which ruled for 10 years, from regaining control.'
BSP national coordinator Akash Anand confirmed that a detailed meeting between BSP supremo Mayawati and Chautala had recently taken place to finalize the alliance. 'In that meeting, it was decided that the BSP would contest 37 out of 90 seats,' he said.
The BSP had previously ended its nine-month-long alliance with INLD in February 2019 due to a family feud within the Chautala family, at a time when INLD was Haryana's main opposition party.
