CPN-UML chairperson K P Sharma Oli has announced a strategic coalition with the Nepali Congress, effectively toppling embattled Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda'. Oli defends this decision, citing the need for political stability and national development. The new coalition, formed with the largest party, the Nepali Congress, has a strong majority in the 275-member House of Representatives.
With the Nepali Congress holding 89 seats and CPN-UML 78 seats, their combined strength of 167 surpasses the required 138 seats for a majority. Prachanda's party, which holds just 32 seats, is set to lose the confidence vote scheduled for Friday. This shift in power paves the way for Oli to become Prime Minister for the third time.
Oli, 72, is expected to take the oath of office on Sunday, marking his return to the premiership. Speaking at the party's secretariat, he emphasized the importance of the alliance with the Nepali Congress for ensuring political stability. Prachanda, 69, has accused Oli of betrayal but is determined to face the confidence vote in Parliament. The two largest parties have agreed to share the government's leadership for the remaining three-year period of the Parliament's term.
