The Congress on Saturday leveled strong accusations against the Narendra Modi government, alleging an ongoing 'betrayal' of Jammu and Kashmir. The Centre's decision to vest more powers in the Lieutenant Governor was highlighted as another indication of what the party termed 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' under its rule.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the new amendments giving the L-G additional powers, claiming they serve to delay the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Kharge insisted that the Modi government wants to maintain control over the region by imposing the L-G's authority, even if statehood is eventually restored.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently declared June 25, the day Emergency was declared in 1975, as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to honor those who endured the period's hardships. On Friday, the Centre fortified the L-G's authority over key administrative decisions, including police and anti-corruption measures, through amendments under the J&K Reorganisation Act. The political consensus remains that Jammu and Kashmir should return to full statehood.
