Kashmir's Martyrs Day Observance Halted by Authorities

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday thwarted efforts by mainstream political parties to pay homage to the 22 Kashmiris killed by the Dogra army on this day in 1931, by preventing marches and placing several leaders under house arrest.

Political figures, including PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, claimed that authorities confined them to their homes to prevent visits to the 'martyrs' graveyard.' The administration provided no official comment on these allegations.

Mehbooba Mufti, a former chief minister, stated her residence in Khimber was locked, stopping her from honoring the 'enduring symbol of Kashmir's resistance.' In a social media post, she highlighted the significance of the day and criticized shifting policies since the abrogation of Article 370.

Additionally, Sajad Lone of the People's Conference and various National Conference leaders reported similar restrictions. The administration also curtailed movements of other parties, including the Apni Party and PDP, reflecting a broader strategy to prevent public commemorations. Such actions were widely condemned as suppressing historical recognition and democratic expression.
