The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in Saturday's attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump during a campaign rally.
The suspect was fatally shot by the Secret Service moments after allegedly firing shots towards the stage where Trump was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI is working to determine a motive for the attack, which resulted in one rally attendee's death and critically injured two other spectators. Trump sustained an ear injury.
State voter records reveal that Crooks was a registered Republican, and the upcoming Nov. 5 election would have been his first opportunity to vote in a presidential race. Crooks resided roughly an hour from where the shooting occurred. The Federal Aviation Administration closed the airspace over Bethel Park for 'special security reasons' following the incident.
