BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Sunday stated that increasing the powers of the Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor is essential to sustain the region's development momentum and ensure good governance.

Chugh, who is also the party's in-charge for J&K, criticized National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah for allegedly misleading people regarding the recent amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act.

In his statement, Chugh defended the amendments, describing them as fundamental to democratic governance in the Union Territory, combating corruption, and ensuring equitable development.

He argued that the new powers are pivotal for maintaining development momentum and good governance in the region, stressing that the BJP will not allow politics of appeasement and corruption to hinder progress.

Chugh mentioned that similar administrative powers have been delegated to Lieutenant Governors in Delhi, Puducherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to highlight the government's commitment to uniformity and transparency.

The central government has significantly empowered the J&K LG to make critical decisions, including those related to police and all-India services officers, and granting prosecution sanctions in various cases. This move faced criticism from leaders like Abdullah, who viewed it as disempowering the people of J&K.

Additionally, Chugh pointed out the disconnect between Abdullah's views and the ground realities in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that residents now benefit from PM Modi's decisive leadership, aiming for economic, cultural, and social growth.

He also highlighted the unprecedented development seen under the Modi government, including infrastructure projects that have considerably reduced travel time and enhanced regional connectivity.
