For the first time in several years, the BJP's tally in Rajya Sabha has fallen below 90. However, the party and its allies are optimistic about recovering their losses and gaining additional seats in the upcoming by-elections.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) anticipates victory in two seats each in Bihar, Maharashtra, and Assam, as well as one seat each in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Tripura due to their numerical upper hand over the opposition. Additionally, the four new nominated members are expected to support the treasury benches.

Traditionally, nominated members are independent regarding party affiliation but often back the agenda of the government that selects them. Currently, the Rajya Sabha has 226 members, with the BJP holding 86 seats. The Congress and Trinamool Congress hold 26 and 13 seats, respectively, while there are 19 vacancies.

The Election Commission has yet to announce the date for by-elections to fill 11 vacancies after the resignation of as many members. Out of the 19 total vacancies in the 245-member Rajya Sabha, four originate from Jammu and Kashmir, which has had no assembly since it was made a Union Territory in 2019.
