The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed shock at the government's decision to ban former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on allegations of anti-state activities. The HRCP warned that this measure is a profound violation of democratic norms and could incite chaos and violence.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced on Monday that the government would initiate the process to ban PTI, the party founded by cricketer-turned-politician Khan, citing its involvement in anti-state activities. The party, reacting sharply, called the move a desperate sign of panic within the federal administration.

Khan, facing over 200 cases and currently imprisoned, has been a significant political figure. The HRCP emphasized that banning the PTI contravenes Article 17 of the Constitution and demands the immediate withdrawal of this decision. Failing to do so could lead to deeper polarization and political turmoil, undermining the government's ability to address pressing issues like the cost-of-living crisis and rising violence.
