Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday directed officials to formulate an action plan aimed at enhancing Backward Classes (BC) reservation in the upcoming rural local body elections. Reddy strategized with ministers and officials to discuss the timeline needed to complete a caste census, which has already received approval, and emphasized conducting local body elections based on the census outcomes, an official release stated.

The Chief Minister urged the concerned department to expedite the action plan to increase the BC quota, emphasizing the necessity of holding elections without delay to facilitate the prompt release of central funds to local bodies. Additionally, Reddy suggested examining how other states implement reservations in their local body elections.

He announced that another meeting would be held on the issue prior to the state assembly's budget session, expected to commence at the end of the month. Officials will present a final decision on increasing reservations based on their report during this meeting. Previously, some backward class organizations had called for the Congress to fulfill its electoral promise of increasing OBC reservation from 23 percent to 42 percent in the Panchayati Raj system.
