Harris Asks Vance for Debate, Sparks Uncertainty on Terms

Despite a voicemail invitation, their teams have yet to agree on debate terms. The Biden and Trump campaigns have different media preferences for the debate.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has extended an invitation to J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, for an August 13 debate hosted by CBS, a Biden-Harris campaign official revealed on Tuesday. Harris reached out via voicemail following Vance's selection as Trump's vice-presidential nominee on Monday.

Despite the candidates’ conversation on Tuesday, their respective teams have not finalized the terms for the debate. The Trump campaign did not immediately comment, and the Biden campaign remained silent on the matter.

Harris had previously accepted terms for a debate with CBS on either July 23 or August 13. However, Trump's campaign preferred a Fox News debate, which President Joe Biden’s campaign refused. The July CBS debate date has since been removed from consideration, per a knowledgeable source.

Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, stated, “I think he'd be more than happy to go forward with the debate,” in reference to Vance. “And I don't see any reason why he wouldn't. I think it's important. You know, we've traditionally always had a VP debate. We'd love to see it.”
