Amid the backlash over the Assam government's decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act of 1935, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has cited an analysis by a 'noted Assamese journalist' to support his concerns. Sarma highlighted data suggesting that Assam could become a Muslim-majority state by 2051 if current trends continue, despite criticism from the opposition Congress.
'Despite @INCIndia's criticism, the data speaks for itself,' Sarma posted on social media platform 'X', referencing journalist @mrinaltalukdar8's analysis. The Chief Minister shared photos from Talukdar's book, 'The Game Called NRC,' to bolster his argument.
Sarma accused the Congress party of 'minority appeasement' and avoiding the reality of demographic changes. He reiterated fears among the Hindu majority regarding high Muslim population growth, citing an increase from 12 percent in 1951 to 40 percent now. The Chief Minister also raised concerns about 'illegal immigrants' marrying tribal daughters without proper legal process.
