Senator Joe Manchin urged President Joe Biden on Sunday to withdraw from his 2024 reelection campaign, advocating for a new generation of leadership. Manchin, an independent since May, emphasized his decision was made with a heavy heart.
He told CNN's 'State of the Union' that nearly three dozen Democrats in Congress, including four senators, believe Biden should exit the race. Senators Peter Welch, Jon Tester, Martin Heinrich, and Sherrod Brown have all expressed the need for Biden to step aside.
Biden’s debate performance has sparked doubts about the 81-year-old’s ability to effectively contend against Republican Donald Trump. Manchin, who left the Democratic Party earlier this year, also announced that he would not seek reelection to the Senate.
