Black Lives Matter called on the Democratic National Committee on Tuesday to immediately host an informal, virtual snap primary across the country before the DNC convention in August. This comes just hours after Vice President Kamala Harris secured enough delegates for the nomination.

“We call for the Rules Committee to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates,” BLM said in a statement to Reuters. The group highlighted the unprecedented political landscape and emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of democracy and Black voters' voices.

The statement from BLM, a movement that played a key role in the 2020 global protests over police violence, adds to the chorus of left-leaning voices supporting Harris after President Biden’s endorsement on Sunday. The organization criticized the Democratic Party's handling of Biden’s candidacy and withdrawal, describing it as “troubling” and alleging that party elites and donors influenced the process unduly.
