French 2030 Winter Olympics Bid Faces Conditional Vote Amid Political Uncertainty
France’s bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics is set for a conditional vote due to a lack of required state and public partnership guarantees. The International Olympic Committee will decide on Wednesday, with Salt Lake City as the sole contender for the 2034 Games. Political changes have complicated France's commitments.
France’s bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics will face a conditional vote on Wednesday due to missing key guarantees, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday. The vote will also decide the 2034 Games host, with Salt Lake City being the sole candidate.
The French bid, which gained recommendation from the IOC executive board in June, still needs the public partnership contribution from the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur regions, along with a state guarantee to deliver the event. According to IOC President Thomas Bach, the vote on the French project will be conditional due to constitutional issues preventing formal guarantees from the French government.
The political turmoil ensued after French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his government resigned last week, leaving the administration in a caretaker role until a new cabinet is formed. This interim government cannot introduce new laws or make major changes. The IOC vote is set to occur just two days before the opening of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
