President Murmu to Address Centenary Celebration of Maharashtra Legislative Council

President Droupadi Murmu will address the Maharashtra legislature on July 29 to mark the centenary celebration of the state legislative council. The announcement came from Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar and Deputy Chairperson of the Upper House Neelam Gorhe during a press briefing on Wednesday.
The event will see the attendance of 172 former council members, as well as current MLAs and MLCs, gathering at the central hall of Vidhan Bhavan. A book chronicling the history of the legislative council since its inception on February 19, 1921, will be released during the occasion.
Moreover, the function will include the distribution of ‘Best Speech’ and ‘Best Legislator’ awards, which have been pending since 2018, presented by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s Maharashtra branch. Both officials, Narwekar and Gorhe, expressed their confidence in the event adding a “golden chapter to the illustrious legacy of the state legislature”.
Addressing the issue of the vacant legislative council chairperson post, Speaker Narwekar indicated that efforts are actively being made to fill the position. Earlier in the month, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar had addressed a joint session of both houses to mark the centenary.
