FBI Director Christopher Wray will face intense questioning from Congress on Wednesday concerning the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Wray, scheduled to appear before the House Judiciary Committee at 10 a.m. (1400 GMT), is expected to provide details on the FBI's investigation into the shooting by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who infiltrated a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The attack left Trump with a wound to his ear, resulted in the death of one rally attendee, and injured two others. Crooks was subsequently killed by law enforcement, and his motive remains unknown. This week's hearings follow the recent resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, amidst bipartisan criticism over the agency's failure to prevent the attack.

Despite calls for transparency, the probe into the shooting may be eclipsed by partisan disputes. Wray has faced staunch opposition from hardline Republicans, particularly over the arrests related to the January 6 Capitol riot. Republican Representative Harriet Hageman has voiced skepticism about obtaining full disclosure, while Democrats, like Representative Deborah Ross, anticipate a contentious but unproductive hearing.
