Russian Army Return Appeal: West Bengal Ex-serviceman's Plea

The office of Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to an appeal on behalf of ex-serviceman Urgen Tamang from West Bengal, reportedly forced to join the Russian Army. The communication has been forwarded to Russia's defence ministry. Pradhan, a local official, is hopeful for his safe return amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The office of Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to a communication by a friend of ex-serviceman Urgen Tamang from West Bengal, who was allegedly coerced into joining the Russian Army after securing employment in Russia and has been appealing for his return home.

The email from Putin’s office, written in Russian, indicates that the request has been forwarded to the defence ministry. A copy of the email, sent to Rabi Pradhan, chairman of the Kalimpong Municipality’s board of administrators, on July 23, is with PTI.

'We are hopeful that things will gather momentum following this letter from Putin’s office,' Pradhan told PTI. He had emailed Putin on Tamang’s behalf via the Russian Embassy in Delhi on July 21.

'We have forwarded all necessary documents regarding Urgen's appeal,' Pradhan said. Urgen, a mid-40s ex-serviceman, arrived in Russia on January 18 seeking employment. He allegedly informed his family that he was coerced to join the second battalion of the 144th brigade of the Russian Army and sent to the Ukraine war frontline.

Pradhan remains optimistic, especially after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent discussions with Putin. He mentioned speaking to Urgen on Wednesday evening, with Urgen stating he and others were moved to another bunker 50 km from their previous location. Contact has since been lost.
