A Congress activist died on Thursday after being allegedly tied to a tree and thrashed by a group at Moinaguri in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, officials reported.
The victim, Manik Roy, was allegedly beaten with iron rods and sticks during a dispute with his neighbours on Wednesday night. He was rescued by a police team and taken to Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
According to his family and WBPCC president Adhir Chowdhury, some of the assailants were members of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Five individuals were arrested in connection with the incident. Roy's wife claimed he had received death threats for some time.
Chowdhury stated, “It seems that Congress workers have no right to pursue political activities in TMC-ruled West Bengal. We want a fair probe into the murder of Roy.”
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh described the incident as unfortunate and insisted that all those involved should face justice, adding that any politicization attempts should be denounced.
