In a dramatic turn of events, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee walked out of a Niti Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, claiming she was unfairly stopped midway through her speech.
Banerjee asserted that her microphone was switched off after just five minutes, while other chief ministers spoke for much longer.
Government sources denied her claim, saying her allotted time was over.
“This is insulting. I will not attend any further meeting,” Banerjee declared, pointing out that she was the sole opposition representative in attendance.
She highlighted that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu was given 20 minutes to speak, while she was curtailed after merely five.
Banerjee's allegations included accusations of a politically biased budget and discrimination against certain states.
She also raised concerns about financial powers of Niti Aayog and the pending central funds due to West Bengal.
Government sources clarified that her turn to speak was advanced on special request and she was treated fairly.
Nonetheless, the incident has raised questions on the treatment of opposition voices in national meetings.
