Mali's Tuareg Rebels Claim Deadly Victory Over Government Forces and Wagner Mercenaries

A coalition of armed Tuareg groups in northern Mali declared on Saturday that they had killed numerous government soldiers and Russian mercenaries affiliated with the Wagner group during a battle near the Algerian border.

Amateur videos circulated on social media showing several lifeless bodies, both white men and Malian soldiers, strewn across the battlefield alongside destroyed vehicles.

The rebel claim followed a Malian army statement issued on Friday night, which reported two soldiers killed and 10 wounded in a rebel attack, resulting in the disabling of two armoured vehicles and two pickup trucks. The army stated that approximately 20 rebels were killed, and several vehicles were destroyed.

Independent verification of either account was not possible at this time.

Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, spokesperson for the pro-independence CSP-DPA coalition, issued a statement asserting that a two-day battle on the periphery of Tinzawaten village resulted in the “routing” of the Malian army and Russian mercenaries, causing significant losses in lives and equipment. He further claimed that some Malian soldiers and Wagner mercenaries had surrendered to the Tuareg fighters. If accurate, it would mark the most severe setback for Wagner mercenaries at the hands of Tuareg rebels in Mali.

Rida Lyammouri, a senior fellow at the Policy Center for the New South, noted that the battle sends a message to the government that regaining control of the northern regions would be far from straightforward. He expressed concern that this setback may lead to further atrocities against civilians by the government and Wagner forces.
