Thousands of Venezuelans have taken to the streets near Petare, Caracas’ largest poor neighborhood, to protest President Nicolás Maduro’s contested election victory.

In Petare, protesters shouted slogans against Maduro and masked youths tore down his campaign posters. Despite the heavy presence of armed security forces just blocks away, the demonstration remained peaceful.

Protesters chanted, “It’s going to fall. This government is going to fall!” as people on rooftops showed their support by banging pots and waving Venezuelan flags. The National Electoral Council, aligned with Maduro's ruling party, had announced his victory, securing him a third six-year term.
