BJD leader Mamata Mohanta resigned from her party on Wednesday, shortly after stepping down as a Rajya Sabha MP. Speculation is rife that Mohanta may join the BJP.
In her resignation letter addressed to BJD president Naveen Patnaik, Mohanta expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve both the people of Mayurbhanj and Odisha at a national level. She stated her belief that her and her community’s services were no longer required by the party.
Mohanta's departure reduces the BJD's Rajya Sabha representation to eight members. Insiders from the BJP suggest she might secure re-election with the backing of the party's expanded strength in the state assembly, where the BJP currently holds 78 seats, compared to the BJD's 51.
