The United Auto Workers union has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for U.S. president, giving her a notable boost in the swing state of Michigan as her campaign gains momentum. UAW President Shawn Fain commended Harris's history of supporting the working class and vowed she would combat corporate greed.
The union, which has a membership of 370,000 primarily based in Michigan, decided to endorse Harris after initially backing President Joe Biden's reelection bid before he dropped out of the race in July. Harris is scheduled to rally with UAW members in Detroit on Aug. 7.
While the UAW has traditionally supported Democratic candidates, other major unions such as the Teamsters have yet to make an endorsement. However, Trump has criticized the UAW for failing to stop Chinese automakers from building factories in Mexico.
