Eighteen Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs were suspended from the Jharkhand Assembly until 2 PM on August 2. The suspension followed a disruption in proceedings as the MLAs refused to leave the House, despite repeated warnings from Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto.
The disturbance stemmed from the BJP members' protest against the forcible eviction of opposition MLAs by marshals the previous day and Chief Minister Hemant Soren's refusal to respond to their questions. Opposition Leader Amar Kumar Bauri accused the current administration of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies, likening their protest to the peaceful methods advocated by Mahatma Gandhi.
As chaos ensued, Speaker Mahto called upon marshals to remove the defiant MLAs. He also announced that the Assembly Ethics Committee would investigate the matter and submit a report within a week. Meanwhile, BJP legislators continued to decry what they termed as the 'murder of democracy,' promising to challenge the incumbent JMM-led government's actions both inside and outside the assembly.
