R Ranganayaki, serving as the councillor from DMK's Ward 29, was unanimously elected as the Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation on Tuesday.
She was the only candidate to nominate herself for the position, which was left vacant following the recent resignation of A Kalpana. In the 100-member council, the ruling DMK holds a significant majority with 96 seats, contrasted by AIADMK's three seats and one represented by an independent.
Upon taking charge, Ranganayaki received congratulations from State Ministers K N Nehru and S Muthusamy. They also presented her with a sengol, symbolizing her new role as Coimbatore's seventh Mayor.
