US Vice President Kamala Harris, a trailblazer of Indian and African descent, has officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination. Harris now stands as the first Indian-American to achieve this milestone, set to face former President Donald Trump in the November general elections.

Harris's nomination came in the wake of President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal last month. The transition was swift and decisive, with Harris clinching the nomination after a virtual roll call vote among Democratic delegates last Friday. ‘I am honoured to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States,’ Harris stated, ahead of her official acceptance next week.

Garnering 99% of the votes from 4,567 delegates, Harris’s position was affirmed by the Democratic National Convention. The next steps include the formal certification of the roll call and the acceptance of the nomination by Harris and her running mate. Delegates will celebrate this historic event at the convention in Chicago from August 9 to 22. ‘With 99% support from delegates, Vice President Harris has historic momentum,’ noted DNC chair Jaime Harrison and DNCC chair Minyon Moore.
