Bangladesh's political landscape has undergone significant upheaval as President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on Tuesday. This pivotal move comes on the heels of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and her departure from the country after an intense crackdown on a student-led uprising.

The president's office released a statement detailing the decision, which included the release of Begum Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), from house arrest. The statement emphasized that meetings were held with defense force chiefs, political leaders, student representatives, and civil society figures before reaching the resolution to dissolve parliament.

Sheikh Hasina's recent flight marks the conclusion of her 15-year second tenure in power. General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Bangladesh's army chief, is slated to engage with student leaders to discuss the formation of an interim government tasked with overseeing upcoming elections.
