Sri Lankan President Comments on Sheikh Hasina's Plight
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed his concern for Sheikh Hasina and suggested Bangladesh's political stability could have been maintained if Khaleda Zia was released earlier. Wickremesinghe acknowledged Hasina's financial support to Sri Lanka during their economic crisis and wished for the restoration of normalcy in Bangladesh.
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday voiced concern for Sheikh Hasina's current predicament, suggesting that Bangladesh's political landscape might have been more stable had she released former premier Khaleda Zia from jail earlier.
Addressing an event in Colombo, Wickremesinghe noted, "Although she is no longer in office, Sheikh Hasina lent Sri Lanka USD 200 million at a dire time for our nation." This loan from Hasina's government during Sri Lanka's economic crisis in 2022 was a significant external assistance alongside India's USD 4 billion aid.
Wickremesinghe also highlighted the political parallels, referencing his own ascension to the presidency amidst turmoil, similar to the situation in Bangladesh. He wished for a swift return to normalcy in Bangladesh, emphasizing the strong economic ties between the two countries, including extensive investments by Sri Lanka in Bangladesh.
