UAW President Criticizes Trump's Ties to Musk Amid Harris Campaign

United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his association with billionaire Elon Musk during a campaign event for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday.

Musk had previously endorsed Trump for the upcoming November election, following an alleged assassination attempt on the former president in July. Subsequently, the Wall Street Journal reported that Musk planned to donate approximately $45 million a month to a newly formed pro-Trump super political-action committee. However, both Musk and Trump denied such a commitment after the report was published. Fain accused Trump of changing his stance on electric vehicles due to Musk's endorsement.

Trump, who has historically opposed electric vehicle mandates and voiced criticism of EV policies under Democratic President Joe Biden, recently expressed support for electric vehicles, albeit for a limited portion of the market. “I’m for electric cars. I have to be, because Elon endorsed me very strongly. So I have no choice,” Trump stated at a recent rally, adding that he supports a variety of car types, including gas-propelled and hybrid models. The UAW has endorsed Harris as the new Democratic presidential candidate following Biden's decision to step aside.
