Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took the oath as the head of an interim government in Bangladesh on Thursday.

Yunus, 84, was administered the oath of office by President Mohammed Shahabuddin during a ceremony held at the presidential palace, 'Bangabhaban'.

The economist-turned-politician was appointed head of the interim government on Tuesday following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India amid widespread protests against her administration's controversial jobs quota system.

Yunus, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his groundbreaking work on microlending, now faces the challenge of navigating the country through its current political unrest.
