A political storm erupted over Independent MLA and NDA ally Ravi Rana's suggestions implying that funds distributed to women under Maharashtra's 'Ladki Bahin' scheme will be reclaimed if they don't vote favorably in upcoming elections.
Congress and NCP (SP) seized on Rana's remarks, claiming the scheme is politically motivated. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis intervened, asserting that a brother's gift couldn't be taken back. Fadnavis criticized the former Maha Vikas Aghadi government for overlooking women's empowerment.
Ravi Rana, addressing a public event, warned women about reclaiming the aid if they did not support him. He later clarified his comment as humor. Meanwhile, the first two installments of the scheme are set for August 17.
