Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has unveiled a comprehensive economic agenda aimed at reducing the cost of essential items like groceries, housing, and healthcare. Her plan, detailed by aides, also seeks to bolster the child tax credit, a crucial element for working families with small children.

Harris, who is also the U.S. vice president, will outline specifics of her economic blueprint in an upcoming speech in North Carolina. The speech will focus on combating 'price gouging' and emphasize the significance of consumer prices as a key issue for voters in the forthcoming November election.

Inflation has dipped below 3% for the first time in over three years, according to the Labor Department. However, prices for groceries and other consumer goods remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Harris's campaign aims to address these persistent issues through federal legislation targeting excessive corporate pricing, especially in the food and grocery sectors.

Her proposal includes empowering the Federal Trade Commission to investigate and penalize abuses within these industries, alongside greater scrutiny on corporate mergers. The Harris campaign also highlights her focus on reducing prescription drug and housing costs.

Harris's economic platform closely aligns with President Joe Biden's but will emphasize policies crucial to her. She remains particularly focused on the child tax credit, a policy that reduces tax burdens for lower-income families. However, many of her economic initiatives, similar to those of her Republican rival Donald Trump, require congressional approval.

While details of the speech are still being finalized, Harris's team aims to avoid divisive rhetoric, particularly on sensitive topics like energy policies. Her updated stance no longer includes a fracking ban or the 'Medicare for All' initiative.

Harris also aims to draw clear distinctions between her economic policies and those of Trump, particularly on tax policy and tariffs. Trump has proposed making permanent many of his prior tax cuts and imposing new tariffs on imports, both of which Harris opposes.

Trump’s campaign has criticized Harris’s economic track record, with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt arguing that Americans can trust Trump to restore prosperity and affordability.
