West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday voiced her lament over the perceived erosion of the principles that guided India's freedom struggle and are enshrined in the Constitution, attributing it to the rise of sectarian political forces.

During Independence Day celebrations, Banerjee stood firm on her commitment to defending India's sovereignty and secular values. The day's events included the hoisting of the tricolour at Red Road, a review of a march past by army and police regiments, and the awarding of medals to four IPS officers for their exceptional service.

On social media platform X, Banerjee expressed sadness over the current threats to India's democratic and secular fabric. Drawing inspiration from freedom fighter Bagha Jatin, she pledged to maintain India's tradition of sovereignty, secularism, and diverse heritage.

The celebrations also featured colorful tableaux showcasing state government achievements and key projects, as well as performances by school children.
