In a public letter on Thursday, Trump's lawyer, Todd Blanche, suggested that sentencing Trump as scheduled on Sept 18 — roughly seven weeks before Election Day — would interfere with the electoral process. Blanche argued for a postponement allowing the former president to consider next steps after the trial judge, Juan M. Merchan, rules on the defense's request to dismiss the case based on the US Supreme Court's recent presidential immunity ruling.

Blanche stated, “There is no basis for continuing to rush.”
