Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's three-day visit to India is set to chart a multi-sectoral cooperation agenda between the two nations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Ibrahim, who is arriving with a high-level delegation, begins his inaugural visit to India as prime minister on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with Ibrahim for extensive discussions, after which several agreements, including one on the recruitment of Indian workers, are anticipated to be signed.
This visit, highlighted as a 'State Visit' from August 19 to 21 at Modi's invitation, holds immense significance due to ongoing issues of illegal immigration and human trafficking from India to Malaysia. Ibrahim’s itinerary includes a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and homage at Raj Ghat, followed by further discussions and a luncheon hosted by Modi.
The MEA noted that Ibrahim’s visit will herald stronger bilateral ties as India and Malaysia approach the second decade of their Enhanced Strategic Partnership next year. Defence and trade relations have recently seen substantial progress, with both sectors expected to benefit from the upcoming agreements. Bilateral trade volume reached nearly USD 20 billion in 2022-23, positioning Malaysia as one of India’s top trade partners.
