Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Monday demanded the death penalty for those found guilty in the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. Speaking at a press conference, Ghosh denounced political parties, including the BJP and the Left, for allegedly trying to exploit the incident for their own benefit.

Ghosh stated, "An unfortunate incident has happened, the culprit must be hanged, but this does not mean that Ram, the Left, and some evil forces together turn it in another direction. They could not win through votes, but we are protesting against the drama they are doing." The horrific incident has sparked outrage and protests across various sectors, prompting the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is slated to hear the case on August 20.

Protests have erupted in several cities, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Kolkata, with demands for justice and punishment for the accused. In Delhi, doctors from Maulana Azad Medical College and the Northern Railway Central Hospital demonstrated outside Nirman Bhawan. Similar demonstrations occurred in Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Football fans protested in Kolkata on August 18, leading to the cancellation of a Durand Cup match. The police have imposed Section 163 around RG Kar Medical College to maintain order after vandalism at the protest site.
