Union Minister of State George Kurian is poised to secure an unopposed victory in the Rajya Sabha bypoll from Madhya Pradesh, according to an official statement made on Wednesday. Kurian, representing the BJP, is the primary candidate following the submission of nomination forms by three individuals, including a dummy candidate from the BJP.
Nomination papers filed by Kuldeep Belawat might face procedural issues due to the absence of mandatory proposers. Chief Electoral Officer Anupam Rajan reviewed the nominations at the Returning Officer's office within the state assembly building, confirming that the deadline for submissions was August 21. Four nomination papers were filed by three candidates, with two submissions on the final day.
The scrutiny of these papers is scheduled for August 22, with August 27 set as the deadline for withdrawal of nominations. Given BJP's dominance in the Madhya Pradesh assembly and the lack of viable opposition, Kurian is anticipated to be elected unopposed. This vacancy in Rajya Sabha arose after Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia won the Lok Sabha election from Guna constituency.
