Ilyas, a former Member of Parliament from the northern district of Jaffna, represented the island's nine percent Muslim minority in the 1990s. Known for his distinctive electoral symbol, 'injection syringe,' he was positioned fourth on the ballot among the record-breaking 39 candidates.
