Israel launched airstrikes early Sunday targeting positions of the Shiite militia Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to a statement from the Israeli military, the attacks were a defensive measure against Hezbollah's planned missile and rocket launches toward Israeli territory. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesman, confirmed the strikes aimed to eliminate imminent threats to Israeli civilians.
Following Hagari's warning about possible rocket, missile, and drone attacks, sirens were heard in northern Israel. Lebanese media reported airstrikes in the south, with social media footage partially corroborating these claims.
In response, Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv started diverting incoming flights and delaying departures. The Israel Airports Authority confirmed these adjustments, and flight-tracking data showed several El Al flights rerouting.
Hagari emphasized Hezbollah's plans for an extensive attack and warned Lebanese civilians in affected areas to evacuate for their safety. The situation heightens the ongoing tension in the region, sparked by recent events involving Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
