U.S. Seizes Venezuelan President Maduro's Aircraft Over Sanctions Violation
The United States has seized a plane used by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, claiming its purchase violated U.S. sanctions. The aircraft was flown from the Dominican Republic to Florida. This seizure intensifies the pressure on Maduro amid controversies over a contested election and existing U.S. sanctions.
The United States has confiscated a plane used by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, alleging that its acquisition breached U.S. sanctions. The Justice Department announced that the aircraft was transported from the Dominican Republic to Florida.
The seizure adds to the escalating pressure on Maduro, who faces domestic and international criticism over a disputed July 28 election. While Maduro declared victory, opposition claims suggest their candidate emerged triumphantly. Given Maduro's strained relations with the U.S., more sanctions could be on the horizon.
Attorney General Merrick Garland stated, 'This morning, the Justice Department seized an aircraft we allege was illegally purchased for $13 million through a shell company and smuggled out of the United States for use by Nicolás Maduro and his cronies.' Following close cooperation with the Dominican Republic, U.S. officials facilitated the seizure.
